Financing Pathways to Net Zero Carbon
While technology and technical know-how exists to drive emissions to net-zero, financing green or carbon-reduction projects continues to be a challenge for municipalities. This session explored some of the financing vehicles for building upgrades and improvements that can be leveraged by municipalities.

Daryll Nazarene, Area Business Development Manager – Performance Infrastructure, Johnson Controls
Daryll is a senior business executive with more than 25 years of experience within the information technology and energy management industries at IBM and Johnson Controls. He has worked extensively in both the private and public sector markets, including municipalities. Daryll also, has a diverse background and experience in the manufacturing, distribution and design engineering industries that translate well to the public sector market.
Ashley Jones, Account Executive – Performance Infrastructure, Johnson Controls
Ashley has been part of the Johnson Controls team for seven years in account management and business development. She enjoys working with her clientele to develop solutions that are important to them and the environments. Ashley has managed various public sector accounts, including Municipalities, Health Care, Higher Ed, K-12.
Jonathan Frank, Director, Clean Energy Business Development, Vancity Community Investment Bank (VCIB).
Jonathan (Jon) leads business development, deal origination and relationship management for clean energy projects at VCIB. Jon joined VCIB through the bank’s acquisition of CoPower, Canada’s first sustainable investment platform and a leading provider of financing to clean energy and energy efficiency projects. At CoPower, Jon served as a Managing Director and has been involved in a wide range of clean energy technologies across Canada that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate strong financial returns including solar energy, energy efficiency retrofits, geothermal heating and cooling, renewable natural gas, combined heat and power and energy storage. Jon serves on a number of advisory committees on low carbon strategies for the Canadian Green Building Council, the City of Toronto and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund on community eco-efficiency and Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3). Jon was one of the founding executives of Emerging Leaders for Solar Energy and has served as Co- Chair of the National Board of Directors leading initiatives including a charity solar project in Nepal and Canada’s first national mentorship program for renewable energy professionals. He is also the 2015 recipient of the Canadian Solar Industries Association’s “GameChanger” Award for Emerging Solar Leader.
Craig Stephens, Specialist, Energy & Environment, Town of Caledon.
Craig focuses on programs, policies and projects that help lower the energy and environmental impacts of the Town’s Corporate operations. While completing a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on Electric Vehicle Systems, Craig worked as a NRCan Registered Energy Advisor (REA) where he was able to assist over 400 households achieve significant energy and financial savings. As a self-proclaimed tree-hugger, Craig has the personal mandate to be a Net-Positive Carbon individual.
Tami Rothery, Sustainability / Alternative Energy Coordinator, District of Summerland.
Tami is the Sustainability / Alternative Energy Coordinator for the District of Summerland. She has worked for over a decade in post-secondary, not-for-profit, and private organizations to advance the balance between profit, planet, and people, and has previously been involved with organizations such as The Meaningful Work Project, Bullfrog Power, and The Recycling Council of Alberta. As a passionate community leader, Tami is a firm believer in working collaboratively to find opportunities to create resilient, net-positive systems that improve quality of life for all peoples and that empower community members to create the changes they wish to see in the world.
