Net zero carbon emissions is achievable and financially feasible in municipal ice rinks but requires an all-encompassing evaluation and plan of measures, employing life cycle costing that accounts for operations and maintenance costs, and aligns the timing of measures with capital renewal or planned capital investments over time.
On Wednesday, November 17th we presented the results of the Roadmap to Net Zero Ice Rinks, a pilot which took a cohort approach to developing individual roadmaps for nine municipal ice rinks from seven municipalities to get their buildings to net zero carbon emissions over time. We shared the best practices and lessons learned throughout the pilot so other municipalities can apply the learnings to their own portfolio of ice rinks.
